The sun has set on this year’s Hornbill Festival in Nagaland, but the echoes of the “Festival of Festivals” still rise with the mist above Kisama Heritage Village, just outside Kohima. For ten days each December, this natural amphitheater becomes a living museum of Naga identity, where more than 16 tribes gather to drum, dance, and tell stories older than the borders on any map

By day, the arena is a whirl of warrior dances, harvest chants, and log-drum performances that shake the red earth under your feet. Each tribe enters in full regalia—boar tusk necklaces, feathered headgear, shells, beads, and spearheads catching the highland sun—turning every performance into a moving tapestry for the lens and the memory alike. Around them, morungs—traditional community houses—stand like wooden chronicles, each carved façade and totem telling a different chapter of Naga history.

When the sun dips behind the hills, the festival does not end; it changes language. Bonfires crackle in front of each tribal morung, transforming the village into a constellation of orange embers where music nights, rock concerts, and folk sessions flow seamlessly into conversations over rice beer and smoked pork. Lantern-lit aisles guide you through rows of stalls laden with handwoven shawls, bamboo crafts, intricate jewelry, and the sharp scent of oranges from nearby orchards cutting through the cold air.

Despite its global fame, the Hornbill Festival remains at its core an act of cultural remembrance—a way for Nagas to speak to their ancestors and to each other across generations. Wrestling bouts, indigenous games, and storytelling sessions are not staged curiosities; they are lived traditions, placed in one shared space so younger Nagas and curious outsiders can witness the breadth of this heritage in a single valley.

If you missed the magic of the Northeast this December, there is another drumbeat waiting for you from 1–10 December 2025 and beyond at Kisama Heritage Village. Let a journey be designed around the rhythm of log drums and the curve of these misty hills—so that when you arrive, you do not simply watch the Hornbill Festival; you step inside its story.
